This game was a gift from a friend. God bless 'em, but this game isn't all that fun. It's the tale of Marvel superheroes - Thor, Spider Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Elektra, Ms. Marvel and many more.
This game has a great premise. Throw together a group of recognizable characters. Each having their own unique skill list, powers, costumes and attitude. But this game boils down to button mashing. The first hour I was picking up crates and lobbying them across the room, because that did the most damage to my enemies. Then your characters begin to level up and you appreciate +3 striking gauntlets (no, seriously) and other stats that you take for granted in other games.
Playing on the PS2, this game isn't very successful in drawing me into the Marvel universe. A game isn't fun when the 500th bad guy is a different color than the one before him - that isn't a variety, it's just a programmer being lazy. It's great to fight one boss in one level only to have to fight the same baddie again! I fought the Scorpion three times. I fought the Rhino three times. I killed about 90 Dr. Doom bots before I got to the real guy.
It's great to have not so popular characters like Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, Luke Cage, Deadpool and Black Panther, but that wears off quickly. I had Storm, Luck Cage, Blade and Black Panther beating up on all them whities. It was great.
The repetition of having your character spouting one-liners is quickly resolved with the mute button, but I can't help but feel that the Raven Studios folks are going to squeeze every superhero genre out of the same game engine.
It's a great feeling, but I can't recommend this type of game to anyone but hardcore comic book fans. OH! There is a great feeling having more than one friend playing with you - like getting a friend to play as The Thing and laughing at them because they can't fly and you're playing at Iron Man.
